Year 4 Weekly Highlights 14.6.24

Year 4 have begun their new project exploring 'How can we succeed against the odds?' with an art lesson investigating the illustrator and author William Grill who wrote Shackleton's Journey.  In reading, the children shared a text which described how explorers first discovered there was a land mass at the 'bottom of the earth' which became a race to the South Pole.  The children watched a video on Antarctica and identified what the potential hazards were for survival in the region and why explorers were driven to be the first to travel to undiscovered destinations.  So far the children are excited to find out who was first to the South Pole and some of the experiences.  Linked to our project, in science, the children have been investigating living things in the context of Antarctica. They considered how animals are grouped into vertebrates and invertebrates before looking at mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians.  Geography has also been part of our new project with a focus on Biomes and the tundra biome.  Another focus this week has, of course, been the Multiplication Tables Check which the children completed this week.  The children were excited to complete the check especially since they have worked so incredibly hard on their tables.  The children returned to class with beaming smiles.  We are so proud of their hard work and thank you for supporting them to be successful.  In maths, the children have begun the summer unit on Decimals by looking at decimal tenths and making the linking with fractions.
