It has been another busy week in year 4, culminating with a day of exciting book-themed activities for World Book Day!

In English, we started our new topic of Beowulf. We began with listening to some rousing music and describing how it made us feel. We then looked closely at the front cover and made predictions based on the details we could see. The children have really enjoyed reading this book and exploring the characters and settings. They are excited to see what we will do next!

Beowulf was originally written by an Anglo-Saxon poet, which links to our current history topic. This week we were history detectives and used our inference skills to solve a mystery: why did the Anglo Saxons come to Britain? The children weren’t surprised that one reason was that the weather in Britain was good for growing crops. However, they were surprised to discover that the Britons actually paid some of them to come and defend them from invading Picts from Scotland! 

We have started our fractions unit in maths. We were really impressed by how much the children could remember from their year 3 learning – a very positive start! Another event happening this week is our year 4 times tables rock stars tournament. The class with the most correct answers by Sunday evening will win extra play time. Please do continue to support and encourage your children to practise their times tables as they are such an important building block in maths (plus, if they help their class win extra play – even better!).

We have been enjoying exploring the setting and opening pages of Whale Boy in our reading lessons. These books will be coming home soon (like Harklights) as the text is one of the longer ones that we look at in year 4. Do ask your child to keep you updated with what has happened so far in the book!
