We are so proud of the Year 4 children this week! They were great ambassadors to our school and showed our visitors all of the fabulous learning and behaviour that they demonstrate every day. 

It is a brand new term, so we have been starting lots of new topics. In English we have an underwater theme to our lessons. We have enjoyed reading and discussing 'Fox and the Deep Sea Quest' and looking closely at the details in 'Island'. This is in preparation for writing a recount of an underwater adventure about a search for a unique species of giant turtle. Some of the recounts will be chosen to be shared with the Natural History Museum!

In Science, we have started to look at mixtures. The children have been using their observation skills to work out which substances are soluble and which are insoluble. We weren't surprised to discover that salt and sugar dissolved and that sand and rice didn't. However, most children expected coffee to dissolve but it didn't quite behave as expected. Further investigations will be needed!

Geography was a chance to look at the atlases and explore the continent of South America as an introduction to our Biomes topic. The children really enjoyed searching for different human and physical features and using their knowledge of compass points to discover more about the country of Peru. 

Our RE unit will focus on Sacred Places, with a particular focus on Hinduism. We began our lesson with some meditation to imagine ourselves somewhere really calm and special, and then went on to unpick the meaning of the word 'sacred'. We then looked at pictures of different places of worship and then focused on a Hindu mandir. We will be visiting a mandir in Southampton soon, so we also thought about questions we would like to ask when we are there.
