This week has felt like we are fully immersed in the Anglo-Saxon period with a history lesson where we discovered why the Anglo-Saxons left Scandinavia and Germany to settle in England and of course we are now fully engrossed in the triumphs of Beowulf in his Anglo-Saxon saga.  We have enjoyed reading the gruesome details of how Beowulf won each of the battles although hopefully the children will not share too many details at home so the performance on the 28th March will be an enjoyable surprise.  Next Tuesday the children will discover more about the Anglo-Saxons daily life, some chalk writing and a tour of a replica Anglo-Saxon village as they spend the day at Butser Hill Ancient Farm.  

In our reading lessons, we have begun reading Whale Boy and so far have been introduced to the main character, Michael.  Our focus for reading is reading with expression but especially reading dialogue with intonation.  Since the story is set in the Caribbean the dialogue reveals quite a lot about this culture and the wonderful characters.  The books will come home shortly and again we will greatly appreciate your support hearing your children read small sections with expression. 

In maths we have investigated equivalent fractions,  comparing fractions and finding unit and non-unit fractions of amounts this week which leads into adding and subtracting fractions next week. The children have enjoyed identifying patterns and discovering that 1/3 of a chocolate bar is a lot bigger than 1/10!  4DN won the Time Tables Rockstars challenge this half term and were rewarded with an extra break, however we are planning a follow up challenge after Easter so please do continue to support your children to learn their tables.  We hope you enjoyed the snow this week and we are hoping for warmer weather next week especially for the trip!  Thick jumpers and wellies may be required!
