After two years with my own year 4 class, it feels quite strange but also a privilege to spend time in a range of classes. I have been lucky to return to year 4 over the last couple of weeks and relive the excitement of our first few units of learning. It is fascinating to see how a new cohort responds to our learning, what original ideas they have and what fresh enthusiasm they can bring. 

This week has seen year 4 continue to explore the story of the BFG and question what happened on that strange night during the witching hour. Who was the strange figure? What were they doing? They have been using their descriptive skills to prepare a police 'wanted' appeal to the public to track down the ominous being and find out his intentions.

In maths, the children have been practising their rounding and ordering skills, building upon the numbers they worked with in year 3 and extending this to greater numbers. We have been greeting each other in French, exploring symbolism of trees in RE, and in computing, we have even begun to learn exactly what the internet is and how networks are formed. This is when I enjoy one of my favourite moments of playing the old dial-up tone to the children and seeing their perplexed faces at the awful racket. Their minds were blown when I explained that this is how we used to connect to the internet. No, we didn't have WiFi and no, you couldn't use the phone at the same time!

Today I have spent my last session in year 4 for the time being and in fact, in any class until the summer, as I embark on my next adventure with baby Oldham number 2. Whilst I will miss the awe and wonder of the year 4 geography, learning basic French phrases and picking my favourite letters from the handwriting practice, I can't say I will miss waddling around the classroom! I'm so glad I got to begin the year with year 4 and I know that with their incredible team of adults, they will carry on thriving. Until the summer, it's Mrs Oldham out!
